1920's Flappers

The dresses featured in this exhibition serve as prime examples of evening gowns that stylish women would have worn in the 1920s. These below-the-knee-length dresses sprinkled with touches of beads, lace, and embroidery and asymmetrical hems were very popular for evening gowns in the 1920s (Smithsonian, 2012). These would later be associated with flappers: young women who wore shorter skirts and hairstyles to show that they were free from the past’s social restraints and danced the Charleston at all hours of the night (Tortora & Marcketti, 2015). They are iconic of the Jazz Age as the dresses’ loose fit and sleeveless style allowed movement for dancing. In addition, the black dress featured here brings to mind one of the most influential French couture designers of the decade, Coco Chanel, who popularized the little black dress, and remains a staple in women’s wardrobes today (Blanco, 2015).
